Glossary of Terms

  • A business model where goods and services are traded and paid for on the basis of access rather than ownership; underutilised assets are shared to optimise their use. For example Spotify where users pay for access to music rather than purchasing the music outright and owning (in CD form). Netflix is another example where users pay to access films rather than owning their own DVD copies.

  • The sharing of C-suite services delivered by self-employed C-suite professionals (CxOs). SME businesses don’t want, don’t need, or can’t afford to employ their C-suite but recognise they need the skillset on an ongoing basis or as the need arises. Larger organisations use the C-suite access economy to secure the C-suite skills and knowledge they need to fulfil all the obligations of a functional C-suite without relying on a fixed group of individuals. Usage intensity can be flexible to fit requirements and dialled up and down depending on the need.

  • The overarching term to describe the delivery of C-suite services using the access economy model.

  • The specific services (strategy and leadership) delivered by the CxOs in the C-suite access economy to their clients.

  • The state in which individuals feel as though a target of ownership is ’theirs’ (i.e. It is MINE!). This could be as simple as the feelings of ownership we have over our house, our car, our pets, our music; or in a business setting, how we refer to our people or employees “they are part of our team, our organisation, they belong to us.”

  • A career that has encompassed several related or unrelated jobs or roles. Someone with a portfolio career may hold a variety of job/role types (part-time, job-sharing, gig working, freelancing etc.) and may work various positions simultaneously or at different points in time.

  • A self-employed C-suite professional in a particular discipline (e.g. Chief Financial Officer or CFO for Finance, Chief Marketing Officer or CMO in Marketing, Chief Human Resources Officer or CHRO in Human Resources) working in the access economy and sharing their services generally for the long-term between a number of different clients, usually a portfolio of between 3 and 10. Each client can typically gain flexible access to their CxO as required in fractions of time from 1 day per month up to 3 to 4 days per week as required.

  • Part-time in this context means a self-employed C-suite professional in a particular discipline (e.g. Chief Financial Officer or CFO in Finance, Chief Marketing Officer or CMO in Marketing, Chief Human Resources Officer or CHRO in Human Resources) working in the access economy and sharing their services, generally for the long-term, between a number of different clients, usually a portfolio between 3 and 10. This terms also includes a self-employed CxO working 3 days a week for just one client.

  • A self-employed professional who has set up their own business to sell their services to clients.

  • Not to be confused with fractional. Generally a self-employed professional most often working in a non-permanent capacity but working full-time with one organisation for a fixed period of time only.
